Meet the Relativity Masters At CDS

Jan 24, 2018

As the leading eDiscovery platform, Relativity is used by more than 12,000 organizations to manage large volumes of data and quickly identify key issues during litigation, internal investigations, and compliance projects. Relativity provides extensive education and training to enable service partners to maximize their use of Relativity. In addition to achieving Orange-level Relativity Best in Service recognition, CDS encourages individual employees to pursue Relativity specialty certifications. We’re proud to have several employees who have achieved the highest designation – Relativity Master. Tracy Jones, Project Manager and Anna Krause, Project Coordinator recently shared their thoughts about the benefits of the Master designation and their career path working in the eDiscovery field.

What is a Relativity Master?

In order to become a Relativity Master, you must be a current Relativity Certified Administrator and obtain four specialty certifications. You must keep all five certifications current in order to keep your Relativity Master status. The Relativity Certified Sales Professional represents a different professional track and does not count towards Master status.

Why did you decide to pursue the Master certification?

Tracy: I wanted to build my skills and confidence. I was the first to become a Master at CDS and it took me over a year to get all 5 certifications.

Anna: I started with the Analytics specialty certification because that was the focus of my work. I then got another specialty certification and decided to keep going and get my RCA. I had momentum going so I got 2 more certifications.

What are the benefits of Master certification?

Tracy: It shows clients and others that you have a certain level of expertise – that you have the tools to help them with their eDiscovery needs and you know how to use them. The certifications are more on the technical side, but the education also helps you to answer questions and make the right choices in order to help clients save time and money by using the most efficient workflows possible.

Anna: It educates you on handling issues beyond what you may have experienced in prior work projects. Clients benefit because you have a much better understanding of the whole process, so you can better anticipate their needs and provide a higher level of service.

How did you get into eDiscovery?

Tracy: It wasn’t planned. I was job hunting after getting a Masters in International Relations and applied for a position at a law firm. Because I worked as a HR assistant while in grad school, they knew I could work with databases. I ended up working at 2 law firms before coming to CDS 2 years ago as a project manager.

Anna: I was a computer science major and knew nothing about eDiscovery as a career field, but I used my expertise with technology to get a job at a small eDiscovery firm. There I learned everything from the ground up before coming to CDS almost a year ago.

What do you like most about your job?

Tracy: I like working with different people and balancing technical skills with communication skills. In my role, I need to be able to explain technical concepts in a way that’s easy to understand. Also, I enjoy the challenge of having to figure out the best solution and workflow for a matter.

Anna: I always liked the technical work, but I also enjoy working with clients. I like doing work that provides a benefit to clients and finding solutions to make their work easier.

Do you have advice for others seeking certifications?

Tracy: There are a lot of resources and information on the Relativity website. You do need to have the time and dedication to pursue certification. I would recommend studying with others, so you can help each other.

Anna: Relativity has certifications geared to all types of positions in eDiscovery. Everyone can find a certification that would be applicable to what they do and would be helpful to their work.
